ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ spurs excitement for rodeo team launch

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ will launch its first rodeo team in fall 2025, giving students the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.Rodeo Team

Dr. Gene Theodori, associate provost for academic and research administration, is leading the effort to establish the team and recruit students. He will serve as head coach and faculty advisor.

“This is a unique and exciting opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, represent LU and be part of one of the most historic sporting traditions in America,” Theodori said. “Rodeo isn’t just a sport. It’s a way of life that teaches responsibility, builds mental and physical toughness and encourages teamwork.”

The team will compete as a member school of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, the sport’s primary governing body. Unlike NCAA athletics, college rodeo is organized separately, with students competing in regional circuits to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo held each June in Casper, Wyo.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ will compete in the NIRA’s Southern Region, which includes colleges and universities from Texas and Louisiana. Students will have the opportunity to compete in a variety of events, including:

  • Bareback riding
  • Saddle bronc riding
  • Bull riding
  • Tie-down roping
  • Steer wrestling
  • Team roping
  • Breakaway roping
  • Barrel racing
  • Goat tying

Students will participate in 10 rodeos during the academic year with five events in the fall and five in the spring. Individual competitors will earn points throughout the season with hopes of qualifying for nationals.

“Students don’t have to come in with a championship belt buckle to join,” Theodori said. “We’re building this team from the ground up, and we welcome all levels of experience.”

An informational meeting for interested students will be held Tuesday, May 6, from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Science and Technology Building in room 275.

Theodori emphasized the importance of building the team quickly, as at least five students are needed for LU to become a NIRA member school.

“This is the beginning of something special,” Theodori said. “We’re looking for students who have heart, grit and a love for rodeo. Whether you grew up around horses and cattle or are just passionate about the sport, we want you here.”
